# Create a Workflow

> Create a WorldVisa workflow in the dashboard and define its identifier, metadata, tags, and initial configuration to start orchestrating multi-channel notifications.

Create workflows in the WorldVisa dashboard or through the workflow API. This guide walks through the dashboard.

A workflow defines how WorldVisa delivers notifications for a specific event. It contains the steps, templates, and rules that control how messages are sent across channels.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Workflows can only be created and managed in the development environment. Once created, workflows can be synced to other environments. To learn more, refer to Environments.

## Create a workflow

You can create a WorldVisa workflow in the following ways:

* **Create from scratch**: Build a custom workflow tailored to your exact needs.
* **Create from template**: Start with pre-built workflows for common use cases.

> [tab] From scratch
>
> **1. Go to the WorldVisa Dashboard**
>
> Sign in at the WorldVisa Dashboard.
>
> **2. Navigate to Workflows**
>
> Open **Workflows** from the left sidebar.
>
> **3. Click Create workflow**

>
> **4. Fill in workflow details**
>
> * **Name** (Required): The display name shown in the dashboard. You can change this later in the workflow editor.
> * **Identifier** (Required): The `workflowId` is immutable. It must be in a valid slug format (letters, numbers, hyphens, dots and underscores only) and must be unique within one environment.
> > [!NOTE]
> >
> > The `workflowId` is required when triggering a workflow and when using [trigger overrides](https://docs.worldvisagroup.com/developers/integrations/trigger-overrides.md). It is also used to conditionally display notifications in the `<Inbox />`.
> * **Tags** (Optional): Organize and categorize workflows. Tags can be added later in the workflow editor.
> > [!NOTE]
> >
> > To learn more about Tags, refer to [workflow tags](https://docs.worldvisagroup.com/developers/workflow/configure-workflow.md#tags).
> * **Description** (Optional): Document the workflow’s purpose and behavior for your team. Description can be added later in the workflow editor.

## Send the first notification

Creating the workflow stores the definition. It does not send anything.

1. In the workflow editor, add a channel step and write the message.
2. Open the [Activity Feed](https://docs.worldvisagroup.com/developers/workflow/monitor-and-debug-workflow.md) and confirm the run.
3. [Trigger the workflow from your backend](https://docs.worldvisagroup.com/developers/workflow/trigger-workflow.md) with the Development secret key and the workflow identifier.

Workflows are created in Development. Production does not accept edits. Publish before a Production trigger can run the workflow.

## Manage workflows

Once created, you can manage workflows from the Workflows page:

### Update a workflow

After creating a workflow, you can modify its configuration at any time from the workflow editor. This allows you to evolve notification logic without creating a new workflow.

Click on any workflow to open the workflow editor, where you can:

* Update name and description (identifier cannot be changed)
* Add or remove the workflow tags.
* Change [workflow status](https://docs.worldvisagroup.com/developers/workflow/configure-workflow.md#workflow-status).
* Configure [channel preferences](https://docs.worldvisagroup.com/developers/workflow/configure-workflow.md#channel-preferences) and [payload schema](https://docs.worldvisagroup.com/developers/workflow/configure-workflow.md#payload-schema).
* Add, remove, or reorder [steps](https://docs.worldvisagroup.com/developers/workflow/add-and-configure-steps#add-a-step-to-a-workflow).

The dashboard saves workflow edits automatically in the Development environment. You cannot disable auto-save, view an earlier workflow version, or restore a previous version.

Production is view-only for workflows. Make the change in Development, then publish it to Production. If you need a reversible change, duplicate the workflow first and test the copy before you publish.

### Duplicate a workflow

Duplicating a workflow lets you reuse an existing configuration as a starting point for a new workflow. This is useful when workflows share similar logic but differ in trigger identifiers, content, or steps.

**1. Find the workflow**

Locate the workflow on the **Workflows** page.

**2. Open the menu**

Click the three-dot menu (•••).

**3. Select Duplicate workflow**

Choose **Duplicate workflow** from the workflow menu.

**4. Provide a new name and identifier**

![Duplicate a workflow](https://mintcdn.com/wv-enterprise/nfMqNpG3TRk8Yj_D/images/developers/workflows/create-a-workflow/duplicate-workflow.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=nfMqNpG3TRk8Yj_D\&q=85\&s=6af821a1c758e1bb9b654f73a4bc4e71)

**5. Confirm duplication**

![Duplicate workflow](https://mintcdn.com/wv-enterprise/nfMqNpG3TRk8Yj_D/images/developers/workflows/create-a-workflow/duplicate-a-workflow.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=nfMqNpG3TRk8Yj_D\&q=85\&s=b23311126b06e7688ccfbb806ea9859a)

### Delete a workflow

> [!WARNING]
>
> Deleting a workflow is permanent and cannot be undone. Any existing triggers referencing the deleted workflow will fail with a `workflow not found` error. Execution history is preserved in the [WorldVisa Activity Feed](https://docs.worldvisagroup.com/developers/workflow/monitor-and-debug-workflow.md).

**1. Find the workflow**

Locate the workflow on the **Workflows** page.

**2. Open the menu**

Click the three-dot menu (•••).

**3. Select Delete**

Choose **Delete** from the menu and review the confirmation before continuing.

**4. Confirm deletion**

Review the warning, then confirm to permanently delete the workflow.
